Flattie
Flattie, designed by Eduardo Noronha and researchers from the University of Aveiro — Ricardo Sousa, Fábio Fernandes, and Gabriel Serra — is the first helmet that folds completely flat, down to the size of a 15-inch laptop, offering a 70% reduction in shell volume.
It features cork in its structure — a natural and renewable material — which not only enhances safety by withstanding multiple impacts without losing its protective properties (thanks to its ability to endure high levels of deformation without damage), but also increases the product’s sustainability, as its resistance to repeated impacts allows for prolonged safe use.
Moreover, at the end of its lifecycle, the helmet’s components can be disassembled and recycled — a feature not found in traditional helmets.
